With the New Academic Year 2019-20 starting at community campuses in March, it is always a great month that is full of exciting new Holistic Child Development events to kick-off the new academic year. This March, we have welcomed 531 new Oakians joining the school and our pupils have celebrated World Poetry, Forest & Water Days while also exercising their “vote” to elect our Student Council for 2019-20.
Democracy: Within the history of Silver Oaks, our first formal 2014-15 Student Council (and family members) participated in the World Literacy Day Social Action Project where all Silver Oaks Campuses were named after literary-legends from around the world! The goal, of the annual election event at Silver Oaks, is to raise awareness of the lessons and practices of democracy and considered decision-making from the earliest possible stages in our children’s lives in order for them to grow up as responsible and aware citizens. The roles of the student council members range from assistance in activities such as themed events at school, student week, PTC, study tours, annual days etc. All campuses having pupils in Grade 5 (age 10) or above elected “Campus Head Boy” & Campus Head Girl” through voting by pupils of Grade 1 (age 6) and above. For the 2019-20 elections, the school management invited self-nominations — accompanied by teacher references on academic performance (responsibility) and ability to lead by example through role model behavior (model citizenship). Worthy candidates were asked to prepare representative speeches, which they delivered on the day of the election (March 29). In addition, all pupils were given awareness on “democracy”. With this knowledge, each pupil cast two votes for HB & HG. Following the announcement of elected members, the same day, central oath taking ceremony took place, on April 6. Parents of the elected council members & Principals witnessed the ceremony where a Campus Head administered the oath and respective Campus Heads handed over sashes to the elected HB & HG. We wish our newly elected council the best of luck in upholding their oath through the year, and through life.
World Poetry Day Awareness: Our pupils participated in celebrating “poetry” as a medium of communication while understanding that it is such an important and powerful form of expression that a dedicated “World Poetry Day” was declared by the UN to recognize the unique ability of poetry to capture the creative spirit of the human mind. The decision to proclaim March 21 as World Poetry Day was adopted during 30th UN session held in Paris, France in 1999. The objective behind this dedication is to: encourage a return to the tradition of oral recital; to promote the teaching of poetry; to restore a dialogue between poetry and other arts such as theater, dance, music and painting; and to enable society as a whole to regain and assert its identity. As part of raising awareness about poetry, at Silver Oaks Shools and College, pupils from Pre to Middle School participated in the various forms of poetry – hamd; naat; songs; patriotic songs; national anthem. In addition, they received insight into the poetic contributions of Sir Allama Iqbal, William Shakespeare, Hafeez Jullundhri, and William Wordsworth while also being informed of the contributions of various regional Pakistani poets in the Sindhi, Punjabi, Pushto & Balochi languages. The event closed with few verses from Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai and Baba Bulleh Shah’s poetry which depicted the purity of beliefs along with the message of natural growth and prosperity of our contemporary society.
World Forest & Water Day(s) Awareness: These annual days are observed on March 21 & 22 respectively. World Water Day focuses on the importance of universal access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities in developing countries while also drawing attention to advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. Global celebration of forests provides a platform to raise awareness of the importance of all types of woodlands and trees. Our pupils of Primary & Middle School participated in different activities, ranging from poster & drawing competition to Urdu Creative Writing, to celebrate Water and Forest Days. Pupils of Pre-school enjoyed color day with Show & Tell activities. Our Global Citizenship Awareness objective is to highlight the proactive measures needed to conserve water in future and to avoid deforestation.
